Costa Rica 2015 - ITINERARY (tentative)
MAY 16 to May 27
April/May Orientation & Course work at BHCC prior to leaving for Costa Rica
(schedule to be determined)
Day 1/May 16: Depart Boston early morning. Arrive in San Jose CR early evening. Overnight in San Jose.
Day 2/May 17: Travel to Mirador de Quetzales in the Talamancas (cloud forest ecosystem). Overnight in Mirador de Quetzales.
Day 3/May 18: Early morning hike in cloud forest, hunt for the resplendent quetzal. Late morning travel to La Palma. Hike to remote Indigenous Reserve to visit a Guaymi home. Overnight in the reserve as guests of the Guaymi family.
Day 4/May 19: Service-learning project with school in the reserve. In afternoon travel to Village of Sierpe on the Sierpe River. Overnight in Sierpe.
Day 5/May 20: Early morning boat trip down the Rio Sierpe stopping along the way to kayak through a mangrove forest. Arrive at the Campanario field station in the early afternoon. Orientation to the station and introductory hike into the forest. Overnight at Campanario.
Day 6/May 21: Early morning wildlife observation walk, afternoon tide pool study, early evening bat capture and identification. Evening discussion and planning for field projects.
Day 7/May 22: All day hike to Corcovado National Park. Late afternoon free time. Evening preparations for field projects and reflections on trip to Corcovado.
Day 8/May 23: Morning & early afternoon field investigations. Evening presentations of field investigations. Night hike in the forest.
Day 9/May 24: Climb to canopy platform and zip line through forest. Personal solo hour in forest. Evening discussion of Costa Rican conservation and protected areas with a personal challenge. Final night in Campanario.
Day 10/May 25: Leave Campanario via the Rio Sierpe. Catch bus in Sierpe for trip back to San Jose stopping for lunch and souvenir purchases. Overnight in San Jose area.
Day 11/May 26: The day will be spent touring places of interest in the San Jose
Central Valley area. Additional opportunities to purchase souvenirs. Farwell dinner in San Jose.
Day 12/May 27: Departure back to the USA.
